#526. transit

January 6, 2012

the wind turns the river dark
holding hands on the graceful bridge
stone you fly and bring our shores together
vigilant brooklyn heights manhattan shines beside thee

you and i ride
hold our bags
watching
a pearl
rolling
around on
the winter
subway floor

#432. east river

November 14, 2010

o river i depend on
your light grey sparkles green
water running high
under the arched stone bridge
to power my glad
heart but you keep your depths
my secret search

#393. a last walk

September 26, 2010

a last walk with the hound
across the footbridge steps
echo raw roar of the sea
gentle hush flower fields
scent the chill autumn
evening comes lights
the sky and instant
future once now
knowing peace
thru storms
as we hold
on course

#364. evening stroll

August 24, 2010

walking with you
cool august evening
brooklyn bridge view
your hand in mine sings

the lights of the heights
across the east river
as sharp as salt air
makes me tear up

i adore hearing
the strange music
of echoing thoughts
whistling through iron
cables towers wooden
planks of the promenade
the bridge hums with power
transmitting from there to here
across the wide and deep water
between my ideas and my verses

closing my eyes
i see old walt whitman
crossing below knowing
i await him across real time
i begin to truly hear the endless

still
surface
tension
grey
glossy
river
water
bulge
ripple
stone
tower
brooklyn
bridge
summer
heat
wave
day
peace
real
moment
truth
meaning
our
life

July 12, 2010

walking around the battery
the horn of manhattan
i am struck by the difference
in the sensations of the two bodies
of water joining in new york harbor

east river is dark and rough
smelling of decay and creosote
my eyes are caught by bridges
that connect and divide singing
in the wind as big drops splash me

hudson estuary wide and bright
scented by salt and shad
there is no impediment to my vision
the water rolls and roils past
up to the mountains and down
past the narrows to the sea

here i am caught on the land
with the wind calling me to the sea
one day i will answer and i know
you will sail with me

#317. connected

July 8, 2010

floating on the rolling waves
a massive wooden beam
bounces off the stone
tower of brooklyn
bridge sings
and spins hitting
again with a dull tone
sending shivers and ghosts
into my awareness of right now

#311. ghosty moment

July 2, 2010

in my lover’s eyes
it is a whole saturday of the senses
summer light shines off the river
my small golden hound’s low barking
at the laughter of kids on skateboards
shade from the manhattan bridge
in the clatter of the f train roaring
charging to a glorious brooklyn song
the skin throb as the sun comes thru
the single cloud that gave up its ghost
all this in a moment leading to others
traveling to the moon’s silver sheen
in my lover’s eyes

#302. south street walk

June 23, 2010

summer leaves
crisping not
wilting
subway
air dense
as a rye bread
baking on lower
east side
stairs
lifting
up and out
bodies disperse
finding spaces
to catch
delight
zephyr
fragrant
dream floats
across the starry
river where brooklyn
she smiles
dances
cooling us
walkers at night
